Carnatic music is a classical music form from Southern India. Carnatic music is also known as Karnataka sangeetham. While the origin of the name Carnatic has not been documented, the word has two meanings in the Sanskrit language, "pleasing to the ear" or "traditional", both of which fit aptly.
The origin of Carnatic music is said to have been of a divine nature and attributed to the holy scripture of Sama Veda. Bharata Natya Sastra, from around the 5th century A.D. is considered to be the earliest recorded document available on Indian classical music.
